Since Glass Beach is a fairly new addition MacKerricher State Park, signs haven’t yet been developed to warn off collector. It is against state regulations to remove anything from Glass Beach.
I suppose if there is a positive side to this, it is that afer so many years as a city dump site, there is no doubt plenty of glass around — much of which I’m sure gets deposited in the winter when big storm surf pounds the coast.
Thanks for your comments, Doreen.

It’s absolutely gorgeous here in the summer, but I don’t know anything about rowing. Your best bet would be to call one of the main rental places and see if they have the scoop on it. Catch A Canoe is at the mouth of Big River, and you can head upriver for at least 7 miles. The guys at CaC are very knowledgable; ask for Rick Hemmings if you call. Fort Bragg Marine could tell you about rowing up the Noyo River. Finally, you might check in with the local chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association. There are other navigable rivers in the area, but these are the big ones.

I am sorry to say the report of “AL”s return appears to be based upon fiction. The person making the report says his contact at Point Arena got his information about the arrival from two other locals. His contact genuinely believed the story as true and reported it to him. He let the world know about the supposed arrival because it seemed genuine and timely. To his dismay, he later received a message from the same contact person saying he could not verify the story in talking to the local Harbormaster and other Pt. Arena Cove locals ….and he had not seen the bird either. So far, no one can verify the arrival story. He feels badly about the false report as he knows there’s nationwide interest in this bird. Let’s hope that the bird does, in fact, return for the fifteenth winter.

why is there so little informaiton on fishing the big river in califonia?
is it a fishing river?
dff said,
Kris,
I checked the California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations from the Department of Fish and Game. Big River is one of the rivers with special fishing regulations, and here’s what it says is allowed:
1. Fourth Saturday in May through October 31: only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used — and the bag limit is 0.
2. Nov 1 through March 31: only barbless hooks may be used — bag limit is 1 hatchery trout or 1 hatchery steelhead, with a big caveat. “Hatchery trout or steelhead are those showing a healed adipose fin clip (adipose fin is absent). Unless otherwise provided, all other trout and steelhead must be immediately released. Wild trout or steelhead are those not showing a healed adipose fin clip.”
There’s another note that says Big River may be subject to closure in low-flow conditions, and it is the responsibility of the angler to call to obtain info on the status of any stream. The number is 707-944-5533.
I’ve been biking up Big River for years, and the only fishermen I’ve ever seen have been crabbers near the mouth of the river. I checked the regulations, and they are the same for the Noyo, Navarro, and Garcia rivers. The regulations book I have is good through February 28, 2008.

Our dinner at La Petite Rive last Thursday was excellent in every respect, and we’ll look forward to returning. The atmosphere is relaxed and refined, with a splendid ocean view, and Troy and Melanie Barrett have created an imaginative Cal-Continental menu, with emphasis on local ingredients and wines. The all-Menocino wine list is priced extremely inexpensively. Because each main dish includes 5 courses (an amuse-bouche, soup, salad and palate cleanser in addition to the entrée) the prices ($17-29) represent a real bargain. Troy’s Cordon Blue training and attachment to the local Mendocino scene, and the Barretts’ warm hospitality give La Petite Rive a distinctive personality. Each dish was beautifully prepared. There are 2 seatings (5:30 & 8:00PM), and reservations are required.

One of the largest assemblage of historic race cars in the 18 years of
the California Mille will be on display atop San Francisco’s Nob Hill between Mason and California Streets on April 27 from 11 AM- 6 PM. In addition, some 50 Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance classics will be around Nob Hill’s Huntington Park as a preview of the Palo Alto show scheduled for June 22 at Stanford.
The California Mille (MILL-ee) salutes Italy’s famed Mille Miglia (thousand mile) race that ran from Brescia to Rome to Brescia from 1927-1957. Cars that could have qualified for the original event are eligible to apply for entry in the California Mille.
This year’s cars will include some l5 Jaguars, 11 Alfa Romeos, 9 Mercedes-Benz as well as such rarely seen and exotic makes as Talbot-Lago, Nash Healey, Allard, Aceca-Bristol, Hudson Hornet, Kurtis, Cisitalia,
Cunningham, and Delahaye. Participants are expected from l5 U.S. states and six nations: Australia, Colombia, Switzerland, the U.K., Canada and the U.S.
On Monday, April 28, the Mille cars will line up on Mason St., with the oldest vehicle, a 1926 Bentley 6.5 litre from Switzerland, nearest the departure arch. At exactly 9:00 AM a giant Blancpain clock will strike the hour and the green, white and red Italian flag will wave the California Mille through a departure arch. The 1000-mile route will take the Mille west on California Street, into the Presidio, and across the Golden Gate Bridge, then northeast to Rio Vista, Walnut Grove and a lunch stop in Lodi.
The tour continues on Day l to Highway 88 and Jackson, Lake Tahoe and Incline Village for the night.
Day 2 will see the Mille passing through historic Grass Valley and Nevada City, then on to Yuba City and a lunch stop at Colusa. That afternoon, the group will follow Highway 20 to Nice, Lucerne, Ukiah with dinner at the Little River Inn in Mendocino.
On Day 3, the Mille will depart at 9:00 AM for Fort Bragg and Westport,
through the Avenue of the Giants to Honeydew and lunch at Curley’s restaurant in Victorian Ferndale. In the afternoon, the California Mille will
drive to Rio Dell, onto Highway l to Leggett and a return to Mendocino for dinner and overnight with half the Mille staying at the Little River Inn
and the other half at the Mendocino Hotel.
Day 4 will conclude the thousand-mile adventure with a surprise.
After departing the Little River Inn, the Mille will take Highway 101
to Pt. Arena, Gualala, Valley Ford, Pt. Reyes Station, with lunch scheduled at Rancho Nicasio. At 2:l5 PM, the Mille cars will take a loose parade formation for “the best road of the entire tour”: a drive along Ridgecrest Boulevard with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Mt. Tamalpais on the other. After a group photo atop “Tam”, the California Mille will drive toward Mill Valley and their ultimate and secret destination. According to organizer Martin Swig, “We’ll be the first guests at the most spectacular new resort in the area…one that combines California history, stunning views and world class accommodations.” That evening awards will be presented and special guests introduced at at a deluxe dinner at the new resort.
The California Mille, a not-for-profit event presented by Amici americani della Mille Miglia, is one of series of motoring tours under the direction of Martin Swig, including The Anti-Football Drive (for car enthusiasts would would rather drive than watch football on TV) and The Mille Autunno, a fall drive from Los Angeles to Sausalito –on non-freeway roads only.

Greetings Everyone,
The Mendocino County Film Office is pleased to announce the airing of “SHARK SWARM”.
Last June and July we had a production crew in from Los Angeles to film a TV mini-series, for Hallmark. They mainly used Fort Bragg as they were on the water a lot out of Noyo Harbor. I am currently researching things for my book, so I looked at the available info for Jughandle. All the material talks about the plants, since the Ecological Staircase is the big deal. The Russian Gulch SP brochure mostly talks about history.
Here’s what I know to be in the area: deer, skunks, rabbits, foxes, raccoons, and squirrels. You can find bears and mountain lions further inland, but they don’t come this close to people any more ( or very rarely). There are wild turkeys in the area, and red-tailed hawks, and osprey (there are nests up Caspar Creek a short distance away). Brown pelicans can occasionally be seen, too. You might occasionally see sea lions or harbor seals, but there are no permanent colonies here.
In the winter and early spring, you could easily see migrating whales from the bluff above the beach, although I’m not sure how much you’d see from beach level — the beach is a protected pocket beach, so it’s a relatively small area that’s open to the ocean.
I hope this helps.

The District 1 staff worked with the Mendocino Coast Cyclists and the City of Fort Bragg, and is committed to improve cycling on Highway 1, as part of ongoing operations. With improved GIS data, they hope to widen segments of Highway 1 (to provide a respectable bike shoulder) as they routinely resurface sections of Highway 1, where space allows.
You may want to post a link to it on web sites where people are looking for information about cycling opportunities.

Here are some of the songs from the upcoming performance: Shenandoah, Georgia on my Mind, Mood Indigo, In the Still of the Night, Blue Moon, Ave Maria (Biebl), O Nata Lux (Lauridsen), Down to the River to Pray, and more. If you like vocal music, I think you’ll enjoy the concert.
In addition to our standard 9-man lineup, we are also performing some SATB arrangements with a group of ladies, including a great medley of Our Prayer (from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) and Because (from the Beatles).

I checked with MacKerricher State Park, since Glass Beach is now part of the park. Yes, you can take your dogs to the beach there, but they have to remain on leash. That’s the basic rule in State Parks: on a 6-foot leash. They also prohibit dogs when there are nesting birds and seals pupping, but Glass Beach is free of those restrictions.
Now that the Pudding Creek Trestle has been remodeled for walkers, you can walk from Glass Beach north into MacKerricher on the old Haul Road. This road goes for miles along the ocean, and it’s flat, and it’s only open to foot traffic, bikes, and horses.

Today (July 23), it says 40% humidity at my house, about a half-mile inland from the ocean. It varies, depending on how the fog goes in and out. It’s not really a problem, though. The average high temperature for July and August is 65 degrees, so it really doesn’t get uncomfortable. I can’t remember the last really hot day, since it just isn’t a factor in the summer.
Having spent the first half of my life in Texas, I know how humidity is such a killer in the summer. Here, it’s basically irrelevant.

We typically have an Indian Summer in September into October — it’s absolutely gorgeous up here. The summer fogs usually clear up, and the weather is at its best until the rains start.
It all depends on when the rain actually starts. It usually holds off until November, especially in the last few years. But I have also seen 25-foot waves on Oct 31, and the storm that produced them. If it’s not raining, though, it’s likely to be pretty nice, with not a lot of wind.
Have a backup plan, but there’s a good chance it will be beautiful out. I should know about the backup — my outdoor wedding at the Grand Canyon went indoors after 8 inches of snow fell the night before.

Are any there any trails that are reccomended for running 5 to 8 miles. I am especially interested in runs with coastal views.
Thanks,
Amit
dff said,
Amit,
There are 2 places I know for 5-8 mile runs — one along the coast, and the other up Big River (not coastal, but lovely).
The coastal run is the MacKerricher State Park Coastal Path, which starts at Glass Beach in Fort Bragg. For Glass Beach, go north across the newly-refurbished Pudding Creek Trestle on the MacKerricher path. No motorized traffic allowed on any of this, just foot traffic, bikes, and the occasional horse at the northern end…. It’s an old haul road, so it’s plenty wide for passing. The road goes for about 5 or 6 miles, then there’s a stretch of a couple miles on beach, where the road was washed out in a big storm. The road picks up again just south of Ten Mile River, where the big sand dunes are. (The dunes are a protected habitat for snowy plovers, so stick to the wet sand.)
The road is usually no more than 100 yards or so from the ocean, and there are unpaved footpaths along the headlands all along the way. You can easily run off on side paths, and then rejoin the paved path. You can see the Lost Coast in a sweeping vista to the north, an area so rugged the highway builders went inland with the Coastal Highway.
The other place for a long run is going up the north side of Big River, next to Mendocino. A lot of people walk and bike this road, and it gradually rises as you go inland. You’re next to Big River at various points, as well as passing through a lot of redwood groves. Since this trail goes inland in a wooded area, there are a lot of wild animals — you should travel with a partner. It is state park land, but more sparsely populated and wilder as you go inland.
The trail along MacKerricher is safe for solo running or biking. It’s a state park, and the path is well-traveled — but not so many that you think about it…. Beautiful!

But I do five stars and this place is a solid five-star experience. I have not had a better meal anywhere, including NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Vegas.
The most bizarre thing about the place? The price. Two of us had a $40 bottle of Anderson Valley wine with our dinner. The total bill? $110. That’s not a typo. Eat this food and you’d gladly pay twice that much, not including the wine.

dff said,
Randy,
We do have poison oak, but no poison ivy. Some areas have more of it — it seems like mixed forests have the most, whereas you don’t see it much in the pure redwood forests. And most coastal headland areas are free of it, at least in the places I’ve walked. Out in the Jackson Forest, or along Big River, you can definitely find it. I’ve never gotten into it from biking or hiking in those areas, though, although a stinging nettle got me once on the leg on a bike ride. Ouch!

Jughandle is one of my favorite trails on the Mendocino Coast to run. It is fun, single track running with twists, turns, ups, and downs. Referred to as an ecological staircase, the trail showcases the diverse ecosystems of our coast. Coastal headlands, redwoods, and a pigmy forest keep the scenery interesting. In the fall and winter, trail users are treated to a great display of our Mendocino Coast wild mushrooms. In the spring, wildflowers and rhododendrons add splashes of color.
The trail is 2.5 miles from the parking lot to the top. I usually finish my run with a cruise around the headlands to make a 6 mile run. This trail is regularly used by hikers and runners so keep an eye out as you zip around the corners; however, it is not uncommon to have the trail to yourself.

Yes, indeed. Clinton Smith is a true craftsman of the American Landscape. His images are soaked in beautiful light, color, and perfect composition. He works a scene, coming to it for several days or even years to get the right elements to line up: The position of the sun, the temperature of the days leading up to the transition of seasons, the phases of the moon, film speed, exposure time, and the final print.
Believe it or not, these images are not photoshopped! This is something truly amazing to behold in an age when everything is manipulated with technology. No, folks, these images cannot be achieved with the aid of photoshop. Instead, it is the traditional art and science of how to expose transparency film and a good dose of patience.
Clinton Smith is the real deal when it comes to the American landscape image. And, his images are a the culmination of a lifetime spent learning about light, film, composition and the essential moment from Ansel Adams, who passed the torch onto local legend, Smith.

Are there any decent paved bike trails in the North Coast area? Anywhere from Elk to Cleone (and beyond) would be fine. Heading up for a 4-day weekend and planning to bring my bike… not sure if I should, given I can’t find many paved trails to ride (other than Old Haul Rd. and Fern Canyon at VanDamme & Russian Gulch). Any tips??
dff said,
Mary,
Slim pickings for road bikes…. I have a friend who rides every day, but he rides very early in the morning on Highway One, before normal people are awake.
The Haul Road at MacKerricher is the longest stretch of pavement with no vehicles, but it runs out after 4 or 5 miles — several miles of the road were washed away in a big storm years ago. You can stretch your ride by following dirt side trails over along the ocean.
I’m not aware of a paved trail into the Fern Canyon — it’s dirt after the parking lot.
If you have Kevlar tires and don’t mind some gravel, then the road on the north side of Big River in Mendocino will let you ride for 8 or 9 miles before it starts turning into single- and double-track. This is an old logging road, and it’s still in decent shape (mostly). It is not paved, but it’s a solid surface covered with gravel.
Most of the other roads with decent pavement have cars on them, and no shoulders or bike lanes. Point Cabrillo Drive between Mendocino and Caspar, or Little Lake Road east of Mendocino are examples of that — quite a bit of traffic, so it wouldn’t be much fun riding.
Riding south on Highway One below the Navarro River would cut down on traffic quite a bit, but there’s still a lot. Most people head north on One from Highway 128, so the road down to Elk has a lot fewer cars. Elk down to Manchester/Point Arena actually opens up for some long straight stretches on One if you’re determined…
Another approach: rent mountain bikes at Catch A Canoe in Mendocino (down on Big River), and go ride for more than a dozen miles out along Big River, or other places out in the Jackson Forest. There are tremendous opportunities for mountain biking here on the Coast!

I heard there is a indoor waterslide somewhere near Fort Bragg. Do you know the name or location? Thanks Linda

Linda,
Yes, the new aquatic center just opened last month. It’s located at Maple and Lincoln streets in Fort Bragg. You can read all about the center at the parks & recreation department Web page: http://www.mendocoastrec.org/aquatic_center-faq.html
It looks great!

I also am guilty of stealing glass from the beach. My wife and I spent this pastweekend in Abion and got the opportunity to visit the beach. We are looking at visiting the area again in December and I am planning to bring the gass back. God Bless.

It’s true…. It’s an odd silk-purse-out-of-sow’s-ear thing. But having seen it on a sunny day, it is interesting to see, and the location is spectacular — you can clearly see the Lost Coast to the north, and the waves are great in the winter.

Ross Ranch is wonderful. I have been on many beach rides with Tobi and will ride with her on many more. She is a wonderful hostess.

I was a guest on Lari Shea’s Redwood Coast Riding Vacation at Ricochet Ridge Ranch in September, 2000. I came here from New York City to ride on beautiful beaches and through magnificent redwoods forests, on the back of a great horse. What Lari promised, she delivered. The horses are amazing athletes, the scenery magical. I was so impressed, I asked her for a job, and moved here six months later to work at Ricochet. I’m still here, riding those incredible beaches, and through these majestic forests. A horse named Virshima started it all. Thanks, Lari, and Ricochet Ridge Ranch, for changing my life and making many of my dreams come true.

Riding at Ricochet Ridge Ranch with Lari Shea for a week on every inch of 10 Mile Beach and the virgin forests of spectacular Mendocino Coast didn’t change my life. I wanted to be taller and younger when it was over. However, it did make my life fuller and richer for having done so. It is an ideal vacation, even for someone who is not sure which end of a horse eats. Treasuring the pristine environment aboard champion horses for a week made each day an indescribable and unique adventure. The ride is a safety first for rider and horse experience. Lari instills confidence while subtely helping to improve every particapant’s skill. My horse, Nikita was brilliant. He was balanced, knew his job perfectly, willing and responsive to my every request. (He even smelled better and was smarter than most of my friends and all of the lawyers I know.) Our small group gelled immediately and shared sweaters and medication by the second day. I have ridden horses all over the world and will definitely come to Ricochet Ridge Ranch to ride the phenominal Mendocino Coast with Lari Shea again and again.

Can anyone tell me if there is going to be a forth of july fireworks show in Fort Bragg this year? What are they like? Are they young child friendly? This will be the first time that I have been to Ft. Bragg as an adult with a family of my oe\wn on the f\orth of July…
Thanks in advance,

David,
Yes, the fireworks in Fort Bragg will be on Saturday night, July 3. The fireworks are aimed out over Noyo Harbor, and parking is pretty straightforward. It’s as child-friendly as noisy bright explosions can be….
You can find out more on the Chamber Web site at http://www.mendocinocoast.com.
