For those of you who have forgotten, the 1978 movie Same Time, Next Year with Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn was filmed here on the Mendoinco Coast in Little River at the Heritage House Inn.
Beginning this week — as the movie’s 30th anniversary approaches — a San Francisco Bay Area theater company will return to the Heritage House to perform the stage version of the movie, Thursday, August 23 through Sunday, August 26. Performances will be at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Ticket prices ranging from $15 to $25 are available by calling the Heritage House at 937-5885.

Starting on August 24, Gloriana Musical Theatre presents Cole Porter’s ANYTHING GOES at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $35 for the Opening Night Gala, which includes the show, food, and beverages. Advance tickets are on sale at Harvest Market and Tangents in Fort Bragg, and at Out of This World in Mendocino. One hour before each performance tickets are on sale, if available, at Eagles Hall Theatre, 210 North Corry (at Alder) in Fort Bragg. 707-964-SHOW.
One of the things that is surprising about the Mendocino Coast is the amount of musical talent in the area. I’d have to suppose that our Per-Capita Musicality Quotient (PCMQ) is significantly higher than average. Gloriana Musical Theatre is one of two opera companies on the Coast, and they focus on light opera and musical theatre. They also do Christmas caroling to raise money for scholarships, something in which I join them. This show promises to be excellent, based on having sung with the mail lead, Paul Friesen. He has one of those strong, smooth bass voices that is as smooth as silk, and he is amazingly expressive through his voice. I’ve learned a lot by singing next to him in the choir, and it’s always a pleasure just hear him singing. Cole Porter is exactly the kind of music to bring out his best qualities, too.
The show runs through August 24th through October 7th, and the performances are on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, with a Sunday matinee at 2. Check it out!

Both tourists and locals should be interested in trails proposed for Glass Beach and the Haul Road, all part of MacKerricher State Park in Fort Bragg, California.
Here are the details of the hearing. More on the actual plan when I get them:

The Perseid meteor shower will be peaking this Sunday evening, August 12, in the evening and up until dawn on Monday. The Perseids can produce spurts of 60-80 meteors per hour, a most impressive sight. Because it’s a New Moon on Sunday night, there won’t be any light interference, and the skies are pretty black along the Coast here anyway. The shower is named after the constellation of Perseus, in the northern part of the sky, because the meteors will seem to radiate from that area. The only thing to consider is the possibility of fog in the night, obscuring any view of the sky. We do get fog off and on in August, and it can go in or out quickly. If you’re determined to see meteors, then plan your route to higher ground inland, such as going east on Highways 20 or 128. I’ve seen some pretty amazing meteors from the Perseids — large and green, with long tracks across the sky. The Perseids have produced 200 an hour in bursts in previous years, and it could always happen when you’re looking. It probably won’t produce that many, but it can easily be one every minute or so — plenty enough to be entertaining.
