If you’ve never seen or tasted a huckleberry, then check out Fort Bragg’s First annual celebration October 19-21. Local restaurants will offer food and drink (margaritas), Carol Hall’s Pepper Jelly Company will have a supply of jam and you’ll be treated to everything from wild boar with huckleberry sauce to cheesecake and creme brulee to sundaes with huckleberry sauce. The coast is loaded with High Bush Coastal Huckleberries, which look like small blue berrries: some 300,000 to 400,000 go unpicked and rot on the vine annually. This year you’ll be able to see and taste first hand.
