The Mendocino Bay Overlook, four acres of bluff owned by the Mendocino Land Trust and open to the public, is a great picnic spot that you’ll likely have all to yourself. To get there, you drive to the end of Main Street in Mendocino, make a right on Highway 1, travel south across the Big River bridge and make the first right at Road 500B and then a quick left on a two lane road. The parking area for the overlook is just 50 yards down the street on the right.
Dawn’s Early Light
I got up before dawn recently to capture a photo of the bay, Big River Beach and the morning light falling on the the Village from the overlook vantage point. There are few other spots on the Mendocino Coast with so much atmosphere. Waves crashing on the rocks. People strolling on the sandy beach below. Surfers. Kayakers. And the historic village of Mendocino on the opposite cliffs.
It may to be breezy, so bring a sweater or jacket and hat.
There’s picnic food at the Mendocino Deli, Harvest Market, Lu’s Kitchen or Corners of the Mouth in Mendocino.
Even if you come just to snap a photograph or share a personal moment with a significant other, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a special place. And one of our new “favorites.”

Local service organizations - Lions, Soroptimist, Rotary, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and more — raise and donate major sums of money each year to support non-profits in need of project funding.
For-profit companies, of course, are a huge support of global contributions for charity. One local example is Redwood Investments in Fort Bragg.
The Redwood Investments Community Grant Program, started in July, has awarded $1,000 to the Mendocino Coast Habitat for Humanity.
“We will use the funds to purchase the kitchen for a home we are now building,” explained Habitat Executive Director Chuck Greenberg. When the family buying the house repays the loan, the grant money will be reused for another home. Other recent Redwood Investments grants: $250 to Kiwanis, $800 to the College of the Redwoods Community Chorus to help pay for an accompanist, and $1,000 to Art Explorers to fund a field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
“We’ve have donated nearly $50,000 to a wide range of organizations since launching Redwood Investments in 2005,” said Dan Catone, one of three partner/owners. “Investing in our community is investing in all of our futures.”
The Redwood Investments Grant Program donates $1,000 each month to non-profits.

If you’ve never seen or tasted a huckleberry, then check out Fort Bragg’s First annual celebration October 19-21. Local restaurants will offer food and drink (margaritas), Carol Hall’s Pepper Jelly Company will have a supply of jam and you’ll be treated to everything from wild boar with huckleberry sauce to cheesecake and creme brulee to sundaes with huckleberry sauce. The coast is loaded with High Bush Coastal Huckleberries, which look like small blue berrries: some 300,000 to 400,000 go unpicked and rot on the vine annually. This year you’ll be able to see and taste first hand.
