The following order comes from Marilyn Murphy, District Superintendent of Mendocino Area State Parks: To protect the resources of Mendocino Headlands State Park, and to provide the public with a safe and enjoyable experience, it is necessary to restrict the use of Big River Beach as follows:

Fires are allowed on Big River Beach only in the provided fire rings from April 1 through October 31st.

From November 1 through March 31st, fires may be built either in the provided fire rings, or as open fires limited to 30 inches or less in diameter on bare sand at least 50 feet from vegetation. Fires must be attended at all times. Open fires must be extinguished with water, as buried coals stay hot and may cause injuries to bare feet.

This provision will be in effect from April 1, 2009, until otherwise posted.

Exceptions to this order may only be granted in writing by the District Superintendent of Mendocino District State Parks, 12301 N. Highway 1, Box #1, Mendocino, CA 95460. Phone (707) 937-5804 for more information.
