Cammie King Conlon is a well known local on California’s Mendocino Coast — a wonderful human being and a positive force in our community. But for people in the South — as in the Deep South — Cammie is a heroine of massive big screen proportions. When she was just 5, she starred as Bonnie Blue Butler, daughter of Rhett Butler, in the 1939 classic movie, Gone With The Wind.  She is among those enshrined in four museums dedicated to the movie and has many times been celebrated in parades in Marietta, Georgia, a hot bed of movie fans, and elsewhere. A 21-gun salute, readings, a prayer and the playing of taps were part of a Memorial Day gathering at Rose Memorial Park in Fort Bragg. About 50 people attended the event. The cemetery was ablaze with small American flags on veteran’s graves.

The village of Mendocino has been a national preservation district for decades and the Historic Preservation Board, dedicated to keeping things they way they were, is the closest thing to a governing body. So Mendocino stays fairly pristine with the entire village a window on the past. But a series of events this year is putting a new spotlight on Mendocino, a town founded by lumber barons in 1852. Beautiful theater

Tuesdays with MorrieMTC’s latest production, Tuesdays with Morrie, is – in a word – beautiful. In these days of economic trials, the protagonist, Morrie, provides a wonderful perspective for our lives. Bob Cohen (Morrie), an MTC actor with many credits, puts on the performance of his career. I told Bob after the show he may as well retire. I can’t imagine what he would do to top that display of acting prowess. Bob’s co-star, Justin Briggs, is brilliant as Morrie’s hard driving, highly ambitious former student, Mitch. We are blessed to have Justin willing to commute from Willits for all the practices and shows. Kudos to Betty Abramson for her artful directing of this incredible piece of theater. Excuse all my superlatives, but this is a show you don’t want to miss.

The show runs through May 24. Call 937-4477 for reservations.

Today begins the month-long celebration of Mendocino Coast Heritage Days with historic walks, preservation talks, heritage roses and a whole lot more.

Docent-led historic walking tours will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and include buildings not open to the general public, such as the Masonic Temple, Presbyterian Church, and the Temple of Kwan Tai. Historic characters come alive on the cemetery tour and through old-time radio broadcasts.  Visitors can tour heritage roses at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens or talk with historic characters on the Skunk Train.
