23rd Mendocino Music Festival – 2009
It’s time again for the Mendocino Music Festival–the 23rd season! There’s a strong lineup this year for the Festival, which is held every year on the Mendocino Headlands, across the street from the Mendocino Hotel on Main Street. (Events are held in the Big Tent, unless otherwise noted in the listing.)
July 11 at 8 pm: The Festival Orchestra

From Midnight at the Oasis to moonlight on the Festival tent. Blues, gospel, R&B backed by a quartet.
July 13 at 3 pm: Paul Hersh
Bach Well-Tempered Clavier, Book Two.

July 13 at 8 pm: Alexander Markov, String Fever
Brilliant violinist is a virtuoso classical and rock musician backed by a string quintet, bass and drums.
July 15 at 3 pm: Roy Malan and Kumaran Arul

July 15 at 8 pm: The Seldom Scene
Skilled musicianship, smooth harmonies, eclectic material and an urban approach distinguish this world famous, award winning bluegrass band.
July 15 at 3 pm: Musical Gems
Ensembles from the Festival Orchestra and emerging artists program perform chamber music. Evergreen Methodist Church, Fort Bragg.
July 16 at 8 pm: They Left a Light
Masterpieces from Nazi Prison Camps with Susan Waterfall on piano and as narrator.
July 17 at 3 pm: Gloria Cheng

July 17 at 8 pm: Opera Fuccini: La Boheme
Young artists struggle with life, love and heartbreak in this famous love story – staged for modern audiences. The opera is known for its sweeping lyricism and stunning orchestration.
July 18 at 3 pm: Holly Tannen

July 18 at 8 pm: Big Band Night
Music of the great bands of the 30s, 40s into the 21st Century.
July 19 at 8 pm: Opera Fuccini: La Boheme

July 20 at 3 pm: Joel Fan
New York based pianist noted for his work with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.
July 21 at 8 pm: Iva Bittova & Alex De Grassi
Grammy nominee acoustic steel-string guitarist with an intricate finger-picking technique and an uncanny gift for melodic invention.
July 22 at 3 pm: Ronnie Gilbert

One of the top saxophonists in the world, a fearless improser with a mature melodic sense, joined by drummer Greg Hutchinson and bassist Matt Penman.
July 25 at 3 pm: Julian Pollack’s Infinite Playground
Soul, jazz and minimalism. new compositions and classic standards.
July 25 at 8 pm: Festival Orchestra & Chorus
Mozart Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra; Mozart Requiem.
The Festival puts a bunch of picnic tables out on the Headlands, so you can pick up a picnic basket at the Mendocino Hotel to enjoy dinner outside before a concert.
