Your best bet is to go up to the Lost Coast, the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. There are navigable rivers along the coast (Big River, Noyo, Albion, Navarro, and more), but none of those are particularly primitive. There are trails and houses and roads at various points along these rivers, so you're not going to be that remote. The Lost Coast is the north end of Mendocino County, extending into Humboldt County. This is a remote as you can get....

We want to take a canoe up one of the rivers in the area and are looking for as primative a nature experience as is possible. Are there camp areas that are small and tucked away? Are there places where we could take our own canoe and travel from one camp site to another? Hope

Hi Dennis,

I recommend you add Van Damme State Park to your list. The upper campground is one of the prettiest I've ever experienced. Good size sites, a lot of privacy and lots of trails for exploring. You also have a beach with a fairly safe harbor for small boats and kayaking; visitor center , with good history on early logging era; bog walk, canyon walk and access to Pygmy forest. kayaking rentals from beach.
