22nd Season of Mendocino Music Festival is Underway

The Music Festival tent on the Mendocino HeadlandsEver since I moved here, the Mendocino Music Festival has been one of the highlights for me. For 2 weeks in July, the town of Mendocino is oriented around the Music Festival. The Festival concerts are held in a huge tent on the Mendocino Headlands, and the music is varied: classical, jazz, Big Band, and more. This year is a personal treat, since I am singing in 2 different events. For the final orchestral concert on July 26, I am part of the chorus for Beethoven’s Ninth.

On Saturday, July 19, the AcaFellas are performing in the Village Chamber Series. The concert is at 3 pm in Preston Hall, adjacent to the Mendocino Presbyterian Church on Main Street. The AcaFellas are nine strong, all male voices, and we’ve been singing together for about 5 years. We’ve also added a quartet of ladies (the AcaBellas) for some numbers, and we have a great variety of songs in store for you. Check it out!

Big July Fourth (and Fifth!) Weekend on the Mendocino Coast

People set up for the parade at the Kelley House

People set up for the parade at the Kelley House.
Friday is Independence Day, and the place to be is in the village of Mendocino for the annual parade. I’ve been going to these for quite a few years now, and they never fail to entertain in one way or another. The parade winds its way along Main Street and up Landing Street, and it starts at Noon. A great spot for watching the parade is down by the Kelley House. They will be serving food and drinks from 11 am to 3 pm, featuring sausages, hot dogs, chips, ice cream, sodas, wine and beer. They are the only place in town serving alcohol after the parade this year, since the big after-party at Friendship Park is alcohol-free. The popular local band Kevin and the Coconuts will be playing all afternoon at Kelley House, and there is also live music at Friendship Park. The parade is sponsored by the great folks at the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce.

On Saturday, the World’s Largest Salmon BBQ runs in Noyo Harbor from 11 am to 6 pm, followed by the big fireworks display. The MacCallum House also sponsors the Albion Street Block Party on Saturday afternoon. For more details about these and other coastal events, visit our Fourth of July Weekend page.

Fun on the Skunk Train

If you haven’t been on the Skunk Train, or if it’s been awhile, now is a perfect opportunity. The Skunk Train is now offering Mendocino County residents discounted fares. On Wednesdays and Sundays, the half-day trip to Northspur is discounted. On Wednesdays, locals can ride the BBQ train for $39 per adult and $19 per child (regularly $65 & $35). Beginning in the 1880s, California Western (the train’s official name) was constructed to haul timber from the forest to the sea. Over the next 30 years, the train continued expanding to match the demands for goods and transportation. Steam passenger service was started in 1904. Finally, in December 1911, the train completed its first excursion carrying 150 passengers into the Willits depot. Steam power was discontinued in 1925 when the self-powered, yellow “Skunk” rail cars were inaugurated. The little trains were quickly nicknamed for their original gas engines, which prompted folks to say, “You can smell ‘em before you can see ‘em.” So, if you’re on the Coast to escape the smoke or a first-time visitor, this is a must-do attraction. It is not often that we get to relive a childhood experience, so don’t miss this one. To obtain additional information, call 707-964-6371.

1812 Tall Ship Lynx at Point Cabrillo Light Station for Publicity

centennial-photo2.jpgThe 122-foot square topsail schooner Lynx, an interpretation of a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812, was at Point Cabrillo Light Station this week posing for publicity photos. Accompanied by a 47-foot motor life boat from the U.S. Coast Guard Noyo Station in Fort Bragg, the Lynx crew manuevered on calm seas back in forth behind the lighthouse May 28 for a half dozen photographers taking photos to be used to promote Point Cabrillo’s centennial planned for 2009. The Lynx is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era making her one of the first ships to defend our freedom. Her crew wears period uniforms and operate the ship in keeping with the maritime traditions of early 19th Century America.

It’s Spring and It’s Beautiful at the Botanical Gardens

Just the other day, near lunch time, I was passing by the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and decided to stop by for a walk to see what’s blooming. Well, everything is. You say, “of course dummy, it’s spring.” But with the new entrance that sweeps you into the garden and lush flowers everywhere, the bloom is even more dramatic than ever before. I was overwhelmed with all the colors. Check it out.
