Riveting Courtroom Drama at the Mendocino Theatre Company
Review by Bob Cohen
A surefire sign of a winning production is the positive audience energy at the Gala party after one of our Friday night openings. I’ve attended a whole lot of them in the last 31 years as actor, director or audience member so I fancy myself something of an expert on the subject. Last Friday night’s Gala after the Mendocino Theatre Company opener of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde had that kind of vibrant energy.
A cast of nine men ranging in age from late teens to 60-something beautifully presented Moise Kaufman’s striking play. Dan Kozloff in the iconic role of Wilde is mesmerizing, a performance surely not to be missed. Ann Woodhead’s direction is exceptional.
As a literate example of entertaining theater Gross Indecency is a riveting courtroom drama complete with an underlying subtext that will keep you talking about the play afterwards. In fact, much of the unfortunate moralizing and religious hysteria that has done so much damage to our political system traces back to Wilde’s travails.
The Mendocino Theatre Company production of Moises Kaufman’s Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde plays Thursdays through Sundays through July 20. Thursday, June 19 is already sold-out. Reservations at 707-937-4477 or online at http://www.mendocinotheatre.org/. MTC’s Helen Schoeni Theater is located on the grounds of the Mendocino Art Center, 45200 Little Lake Street, Mendocino.
Please don’t miss this fine production.

Last summer, they filmed the movie Shark Swarm here in the Mendocino area. It finally aired for the first time yesterday on the Hallmark Channel, but we don’t get that channel in Mendocino. The movie stars Darryl Hannah and John Schneider. Here is a review of the movie — thanks to Debra DeGraw for the pointer. It’s pretty fun when the film crews come to town — they were shooting all around the area last year. It’s a hoot to see places you know in a movie…. I was just watching “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming” recently, which was filmed all around the area. I even know someone who got to be an extra in the film as a young boy. Fun stuff! Check out the Chamber Visitor Center when you come up here — they have a lot of information about the many movies filmed here over the last 100 years.

The Mendocino Film Festival is fast approaching (May 29-June 1), and once again the selection of films is top-notch. As with every successful venture, it takes a lot of people to make it happen. MendocinoFun.com would like to recognize and thank a few of the local lodging owners who have donated lodging to house invited filmmakers during the event.
Agate Cove Inn in Mendocino has generously donated a 3-night stay to filmmaker Celia Carey. Celia Carey produced a very engaging film, “Mr. Dial Has Something to Say” from the Films on the Arts category about an older Black folk artist from the south who has gained national and international recognition. Agate Cove Inn is a beautiful bed & breakfast inn situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. It has one of the best views in Mendocino, spectacular gardens, and gracious hosts, Laraine & Roger.
Coast Getaways is hosting director Jerry Rapp, his film is Mohave Phone Booth. The film tells the tale of four people in Las Vegas connected by seemingly random objects, such as a phone booth in the desert. Showing May 30 at 8 pm. Coast Getaways has vacation rentals to suit anyone’s needs - from a cottage for two to ocean view homes for families.
The Mendocino Hotel is hosting two distingusted guests - featured speaker, Albert Maysles, and Jim McCullough from SF Festival Board. Hotel owner, Tom Kravis, is also sponsoring the Opening Party & Sneak Peeks on May 29 from 5-7 pm at the Hill House in Mendocino. Enjoy Fetzer Family wines and hors d’oeuvres, meet the filmmakers, and sneak a peek at festival film clips. Cost: $15
