I live in Upstate New York and with years of searching I have some very productive spots. Not much luck with spring morels, but mid -summer brings golden chanterelles. We filled our pack on first trip but to late on second. Black trumpets start showing up in early August. I have a spot where they are so numerous I can not pick them all due to time constraints. Isn't that sad! Last week-end, while riding the back roads, we harvested 40 pounds of oyster mushrooms.Now my "golfer" husband, that would never set foot in the forest, has the mushroom bug.The freezer is full and I share with the few people I know here that "trust" such treasures. It was around 4 PM and a Northern Pygmy Owl landed in a tree around 50 feet from us. I was the sole birder and I was totally jazzed! The NPOW was gray, and it sat lengthwise on an alder branch, much in the manner of a nighthawk. I got great looks at the bird for several minutes before it flew out on whatever it's little daytime mission was. I won't forget that sighting any time soon! The fireworks are aimed out over Noyo Harbor, and parking is pretty straightforward.
