Mama Llama kisses her babyMama Llama cuddles with her babyWe were delighted to open our February 2010 Sunset Magazine and discover one of our favorite coastal retreats – Glendeven Inn – was featured.  Named as one of the top 20 destinations of the west, Glendeven Inn offers a mix of elegance and comfort that keep their guests returning year after year.  Their meadow is dotted with llamas that they allow you to visit – very friendly indeed! Breakfast is made with eggs from their chickens and guests are encouraged to participate in feeding time. Both locals and visitors have discovered their cozy Wine Bar(n) or feasted on one of their elegant dinners served in their beautifully restored, historic farmhouse.

WALT MCKEOWN: SCIENCE SUNDAYS

Gallery Bookshop is launching a new after-hours monthly series: Science Sundays, exploring scientific topics with Dr. Walt McKeown.  Formerly known as “Colonel Wingnuts” to the coastal community, Walt was the KOZT weatherman and science journalist for many years.  Presented in cooperation with the Mendocino Scientific Society, Science Sundays will take place on the last Sunday of each month at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, January 31, “Rising Oceans” will present the evidence for and consequences of the general swelling of the world ocean. On February 28th the topic will be “New Worlds: the Discovery of 400 Planets” and on March 28th Walt will discuss “Climate Change on the Mendocino Coast”. Complimentary wine & refreshment. Great Show for Harmony Lovers

January 9 at 7 pm: Mendocino Stories & Music Series
Come to the Mendocino Hotel for Mendocino Stories & Music Series’ annual event of rich, luscious harmonies. Performers this year include a women’s sextet, In the Mix, and the ever-popular Acafellas, along with a few special guests. For harmony lovers, this is an evening not to be missed! Bistro menu and drinks are available as soon as the doors open at 6:00pm. This event was standing room only last year, so come early for best seating. Sliding scale $10 – 15. Mendocino Art Center Rises Like the Phoenix

The Mendocino Art Center suffered a devastating fire back in November, but the center is reopening on December 17. Here is their press release. A highlight is the 3rd Saturday event on December 19, which includes a book signing by Bruce Levene of his history of the Art Center in its 50th year.

Mendocino, CA – The Mendocino Art Center galleries will re-open December
17 with fun activities for the community scheduled over the weekend. The
galleries have been closed since a November 23 fire in the business
offices.

The Granite Avatars of Patagonia Presentation
Thursday, December 17, at 6:00 p.m., photographer Tom Reed will give an
insightful and fascinating behind-the-scenes slide presentation and answer
audience questions, revealing how he captured the images featured in his
Mendocino Art Center exhibit, “The Granite Avatars of Patagonia.”
Admission is free.

Free Holiday Celebration
Celebrate the holidays, the re-opening of the Mendocino Art Center and the
premiere of three new art exhibits at a free 3rd Saturday Artists
Reception, December 19, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This will be the final 50th
Anniversary Gala with raffle prizes, holiday carolers, hot cider and other
refreshments; the release of the Mendocino Art Center’s 50th Anniversary
commemorative book with a book signing with editor Bruce Levene; a Chili
Feed & Art Sale; and celebration of the Rebirth of MAC “Rising from the
Ashes.”

The Wooden Toy Show

Saturday, December 12, is the opening reception from 5-8 pm of handmade wooden toys by the Mendocino Coast Furniture Makers, eemonstrating fun and intriguing wooden toys that entertain children and adults alike.  Cherished by children since they began playing with sticks, wooden toys have always been favored by parents to inspire, amuse and provide quiet entertainment for their young. Enduring and fun, families pass traditional wood toys down though generations. As an integral art of all cultures, toys teach children about their society and the world about them. Hoops, tops, rocking horses, rattles, mobiles, whirlygigs and all matter of wooden toys will pour out of the furniture makers’ workshops.Show runs Dec 12-31, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Mendocino Arts Center, 45200 Little Lake Street, Mendocino. 707-937-5818
