In support of “Gray Whale month” the Artists Co-op of Mendocino focuses on “Celebrating the Marine Environment” for its March show held through April 5. See watercolor paintings featured on the main show wall by Karen Bowers and additional art displayed on individual members walls. Our new works this month present local and worldwide marine life, seascapes, environmental issues, and responses to other sources of inspiration.
The ACM Gallery, upstairs at 45270 Main St., in the village of Mendocino, is open 10:30 AM – 5:00 PM daily except Tuesdays. Don’t miss the Second Saturday opening reception on March 13, from 3:30 to 6:00 PM. Along with the art, our second floor location offers incredible views and opportunities for whale spotting! Visit the Artists Cooperative of Mendocino Web site for more information.

Wine, whales, chowder, whale watching cruises and whale walks are just some of the highlights of this year’s Mendocino Whale Festival. But there’s something new this year: the Little River Whale Festival March 11 & 12. Don’t forget the Fort Bragg’s whale festival the following weekend. All the information is at the official website of the festival. There are still plenty of rooms on the coast if you want to come this weekend or anytime this month during the great whale migration.

People think Humboldt County, Avenue of the Giants and Prairie Creek State Park when they think about seeing California Redwoods. But you don’t have to go that far. Just three hours from the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Bragg is a great launching pad for seeing redwoods. One of my favorites: Jug Handle State Reserve; in a 45-minute walk, you see redwoods and a pygmy forest.
