Cover of Mendocino OutdoorsOn Saturday, August 9, there will be a book signing for my new book at the Mendocino Hotel from 4-6 pm. The wine will be poured by Goldeneye Winery — their wonderful pinot noir.
This event is for the release of the Third Edition of Mendocino Outdoors, the best guidebook about the Mendocino Coast. The new edition is a huge improvement over the past editions in all ways: it’s been completely revised (rewritten, really), and expanded to cover the entire Mendocino Coast. The new edition also has a lot more photography in it, to show you why you might want to go see something. I also ended up revising all of the maps, in addition to new ones.
You can see more about the book, including sample pages, here on the site.

The month of August always amazes me because there are so many things going on. We manage a pretty comprehensive calendar on MendocinoFun.com (thanks, Nancy!), and we put out a monthly calendar as PDF. We send this calendar out to local lodging establishments and others, and put out printed copies at several visitor centers.
This month, there were 46 events listed for August! If you are coming to Mendocino in August, download the PDF file and print it for your convenience. And remember, according to the National Weather Service, the average maximum temperature in August is 64.6 degrees. If you’re baking away inland, come on over!

SF Mime Troupe presents Red State. On Sunday, the Tony Award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe will skewer the electoral process in song and dance in their latest play, ‘Red State.’ Featuring a live band, this colorful musical explores what happens when a small town finds itself at the forefront of a political battle. Can one little town hold an entire election hostage? Should it? Political satire that is anything but silent, ‘Red State’ plays at Fort Bragg’s Cotton Auditorium on Sunday, July 27th, as a benefit for KZYX, the FBHS Drama Club and the Alliance for Democracy.
Doors open at 6pm, live music begins at 6:30, and the play begins at 7 pm. Buy tickets in advance at KZYX.org, Out of This World in Mendocino, and Tangents and Harvest Market in Fort Bragg. More info at tw@mcn.org or 707-937-1113.

More than 20 years ago, I attended a French Country music concert and picnic at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. Set up on an intimate corner among the Garden’s 47 acres, it was a memorable day. For many years, while the beautiful gardens continued to attract people from around the world, the music stopped. No one really remembers why. But the music is back and from 3 pm to 6 pm Sunday, August 3, the San Francisco Bay Area music group, the Fundamentals, will be playing decades of party and dance tunes along with food available for purchase. A perfect setting for a summer concert.
