Captain Tim Gillespie from All-Aboard Adventures has been supplying us with occasional status reports on the California Gray Whale migration. We have info about other whale-related events, as well.

Warm weather and beautiful calm seas. Few pods this week as they begin their migration back north with the babies. By next weekend, there will be many more. Crab season is great this year – just out there waiting to be caught! Here are his previous reports.

You can see whales everywhere and they are coming close to shore. In one day while out fishing for crabs, we saw about 15 pods with three to 15 whales each. We expect them to continue their migration south through the end of this month, then they turn around and head north beginning in March. On Feb. 16, we will begin taking people out salmon fishing and they be able to see lots of whales. If salmon and rock cod fishing is slow, we put the gear out for crabs – we’re seeing really big crab catches.

We’re seeing more and more whales with pods growing from two whales per pod to 10 whales about one mile out. But you can even see them from shore at Todd’s Point in Fort Bragg and at the Mendocino Headlands State Park in Mendocino. We are beginning to see increasing numbers of visitors signing up for whale watching and crabbing trips. We’re getting limits of up to 10 crabs per person.
